Become a trainer with Girlguiding and support our fantastic volunteers to deliver great experiences to girls.

Trainers/prospective trainers are volunteers who are members of Girlguiding and want to support the learning and development of our members by helping others gain skills and knowledge. Together, we all provide quality guiding.

Why become a trainer?

As a trainer, you’ll facilitate and deliver learning opportunities that give volunteers the motivation and confidence to provide good guiding for our girls. You’ll be a role model for other volunteers and help ensure excellence and consistency across our organisation.

Types of trainers

There are three different trainer roles at Girlguiding, but you can qualify to hold more than one.

  • Trainer in leading and managing people
  • Trainer in programme
  • Trainer in a specific subject (subject matter expert) – for example, A Safe Space

Once you have completed your Trainer qualification, you can then develop your skills further by becoming a residential trainer and a trainer leading a team of trainers.

How much time will I need?

There is no set timescale for the Trainer qualification, but most people will need a period of preparation to gain the knowledge required for each module, and to deliver their trainings. As a minimum, you’ll need to:

  • Conduct three trainings which are observed by a tutor
  • Complete a knowledge checklist
  • Record evidence of your progress in a record of completion
  • Keep and submit a Personal Development Plan

To apply, simply download and fill out the application form, then send it to Jenni, County Commissioner

Who can become a mentor? You can!

Could you support and motivate fellow volunteers, using your knowledge and experience to achieve their Girlguiding Qualification? Volunteering as a Mentor could be for you. A mentor does not need to be a fountain of all knowledge – just a friendly face who has achieved a Girlguiding qualification and would like to help others do the same.

Take a look at the mentor profile below and if you would like to be a Leadership Qualification mentor, please contact Melissa and will talk it over with you.

Who can do this role?

A Mentor must be over 18 years old and hold, and have current or recent experience of, the qualification she is mentoring for.

What is the purpose of this role?

To support a fellow volunteer in their training towards the Leadership Qualification. A Mentor will be matched with a member completing a qualification and will be responsible for supporting them through their qualification, ultimately deciding when they are qualified.

What will I do in the role?

  • The list below outlines the general responsibilities of a Mentor
  • Ensure that each Leader in Training (LiT) acquires all the necessary skills, knowledge, attitude and behaviour to achieve their qualification.
  • Maintain good, regular communication with the LiT, sharing knowledge and resources, maintaining support and enthusiasm.
  • Conduct the visits required throughout the qualification to observe the LiT’s skills and help the LiT to reflect on and learn from their experiences.
  • Evaluate the LiTs progress regularly, making sure they understand their role and what is expected of them, helping to identify areas for development.
  • Sign off the LiTs qualification evidence online
  • Motivate, support and encourage each LiT in successfully gaining their qualification.
  • Maintain communication with the LiTs local Commissioner and relevant Advisers/Coordinators or Unit Leader if appropriate, to keep them informed of the LiT’s progress and any relevant difficulties or opportunities to fulfil requirements for their qualification.
  • Signpost the LiT to relevant local training opportunities and help them to register for these.
