In May, two coaches full of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers headed to the South of England Showground, near Haywards Heath, for May-hem, a large scale Region event attended by over 6000 young members from across London and the South East.
The event was split into four zone for us to explore and partake in activities.
First up, we headed to the ‘Groove’ zone, for a giant silent disco! We were given our headphones and glowsticks, and then we headed inside for lots of dancing. There were three music channels to choose from so there was something for everyone, with the favourites being all the songs with actions and cheesy 90s pop.
Next up we headed to the ‘Active’ zone, an area full of giant inflatables and inflatable games. There was so much to choose from, giant assault courses and slides, inflatable football, basketball and mini golf and so much more! It was a very hot day, so we were all ready to find some shade and have lunch after this zone. During lunch we also had a flyover by the air ambulance which was really cool to see.
After lunch, we headed to the ‘Adventure’ zone, where there was so much to do! Some of the activities included in this zone were yoga, rugby skills, bhangra dancing, a campfire, a planetarium, activities run by the Peer Educators and Ambassadors, just to name a few! One of the favourites from this section was definitely the petting zoo, there were loads of different animals to meet including meerkats, snakes and a baby skunk!
Lastly, we headed to the ‘Explore’ zone, where there were ticketed workshops as well as lots of other things to join in with. We had Guides doing a drumming workshop, maypole dancing and learning bell ringing whilst the Brownies and Rainbows did line dancing and learnt the Haka. In addition to all the ticketed workshops, this zone included a massive craft area, circus skills, giant bubbles, fake wounds and first aid skills, obstacle courses and ‘camel’ racing!
Overall, it was an action-packed day, filled to the brim with so many different activities. There was really something for everyone and it was such a wonderful day. It was so great to be at an event of this scale seeing everyone enjoying the activities and the sunshine, it really felt like festival vibes!
A massive thank you to all the volunteers from across the Region that put on this amazing event!
